@potatogun - during my senior manager interview when she asked why did you decide to do accounting, she said my response was the best ever in a long time (and she emphasized long).

I guess what you mentioned with dropping a partner's name is very interesting. I guess he might not have liked name dropping. He asked how i met the partner and i told him he was down at UIUC for recruitment and i spoke to him and found out that he worked for pwc for 21 yrs. The partner told me what i said about his working there for 21 yrs was right so i hope he didnt think i was name dropping to impress him.

i also get a lot of info from this site http://www.narrowingthegaap.com/ which helped me alot through 2nd round interviews. this guy seemed pretty well informed and suggested on name dropping to get an interview. i guess i could be more careful with that in the future :/

@ellipsis123 - what are your plans for now? what school do you go to?

I think it is good to talk about people you've met and drawn some insight from but I would avoid saying the name right out unless asked. I also wouldn't put it in any written document you submit to a big4.

You still have opportunities. Try again. Big4 like to see repeat applicants in school who may not have gotten the chance to intern.

You will still be on a watch list for your school.

After your partner interview, I'm sure he called the partner you name-dropped and asked him what he thought about you. Unless you do actually know him well, his response was likely, "I don't know who the hell that is". It's possible  that you didn't do anything wrong, and that they just liked other people more than you. It's a crapshoot. Just keep trying.

I don't think so, the typo probably did him in. Bad luck really since it's not really a typo.

whilst i cant say for sure what the decider is, it seems to me that the partner makes the call on whether to make that offer or not.. I will say though dont give up try again and again and again... my own experience is as follows, rejected by 2 big 4 firms in a one year period, 2 mid tier firms and virtually ignored at all the conferences i attended all year because i had graduated then ended up with quite a 5 offers in the last 3 weeks. it seems they all get interested in you at once.

I have heard that Beta Alpha Psi is a good networking tool i can vouch for NABA (the one i am a part of) and mystate society of cpa's i met a lot of senior people at their meetings. In short "brush the dirt off your shoulder and move on" done give up.. most of the HR managers at big 4 and mid tier firms know me by name or recognize me now having been trying to get in for 3 years straight.
