Yeah, I heard some people said that they didn't do SIMS at the end, but they still pass.

I think that the CPA exam curve your score. Right?

Or when comparing your break down areas to people who pass, if most of your areas are stronger than them, you pass??

So you think that the Wiley and the DVD is most helpful?
Does the DVD only have lectures? Where are the practice MC questions? Thank you so much.

The whole home-study package for Yaeger is $345 after the discount. If I can only buy the DVD lectures and the book, I think it will be more cheaper. I have already spent a lot of money on Becker.

Once again, where are the practice MC questions. Thanks.

What do you think about Becker for FAR, AUG, and REG?

No offence, but sometimes I think people who says they passed the exam without touching the simulations are the people from AICPA and not real candidates. It is impossible to pass the exam leaving simulations blank. simulations carries 30% of 100 percent.

Not really. Before 2011, 30% simulations included 10% wc.

So if some people did extremely well on MCQs (70%) + WC (10%) = 80%.

I took the exams in windows 3 and 4 of 2009, and window 1 (first quarter) of 2010.  At that time, FAR/AUD/REG had MCQ worth 70%.  SIMs were 10 points each, and written essays were worth 5 each.  The research question (2 of them) were 1/2 point each and were part of the SIM percentage.  BEC was just 90 MCQs.

I have never done well on SIMS, and half the time skipped the research question.  But I always put 25 minutes into the essays - which I prepped for.  For me, the essays are an easy 8 points.

My FAR sims were nothing but government and journal entries!  I knew I aced the MCQs.  I got a 78 and thanked the Lord profusely.  This is the test that made me believe there was a curve.

I'm grateful I passed these exams when there was 10% based on the essays for 3 tests.

Honestly, I think at this point you should realize that they don't use a linear scale in the sense that you're thinking about from your college and high school days.  Just because you get 75% right does not mean you'll get a 75, and just because you get a 90% right does not mean that you'll get a 90.  The scores are completely arbitrary and just show you how you ranked compared to other people taking the exam in that window.

I think that the idea of the weighting is that (assuming last year's rules) the AICPA takes your weighted score on the MC, multiples it by .7, takes your weighted score on WC, multiplies it by .1, takes your raw score on the sims, multiples it by .2 and adds them altogether. Apparently, it seems that you don't really need to get a 75% in the academic sense to pass. The number's probably closer to 60% or so.

And think about it this way, the sims are so anal and sensitive that you're fooling yourself if you think that you can BS your way through them and be that much better off than if you just left them blank. They expect you to mess up and do horribly on the FAR simulations. You're running out of time, it's on obscure material, and they're hard. Anything you get right is just a bonus.

Now, with the new format, you'll probably have to do more accountable on the sims. They're worth twice as much now, and the grading is probably a bit more fair. There are a wide range of topics, and from what I've heard, the functionality is a lot more accessible, and you can do them more easily in a pinch.  However, you can probably still expect that you don't exactly need to ace FAR to pass.  Just a heads up.
