The two writing essays do not have any affect on your overall score out of 800.  The essays are simply to allow colleges to see that you have a solid understanding of the English language.

So, the total score is out of 800?  And how does the GMAT help one get into Grad. School?  (I'm studying for my CPA, but I was just wondering . . .)

Most Grad schools require either a GRE or GMAT exam to get in -- it depends on the school.

The GMAT is exactly like the SATs or the ACTs but for business school.  You have to take this standardized test as a requirement to apply.  The test consists of three parts: 1) math section 2) verbal section (both of these are similar to the SAT) and 3) two written essays.  The best score one can recieve is an 800.  Some people think that the written essays are graded and factored into your final score.  However, the two written essays are not factored in at all.  They are simply to allow the schools to observe how well one can structure a small essay in half an hour.

I litterally took the exam on a Saturday morning after a night out with friends partying.  It was pretty easy.  I didn't do much studying, maybe 2 hours per day of and on starting 2 weeks before the exam using of the the test study guides (forgot which one as I took it in 1988!).  I ended up getting a 680, which was enough for me.

I don't necessarily suggest you do what I did.  I really did this just to see what the exam would be like before I got serious, but in my case I didn;t need to try again!
