It seems that no one has posted in this forum section for awhile, so I thought I would update everyone on my news. Yesterday I received a conditional offer for an accountant 1 position for the state. The starting salary is $36,xxx, but it is only for 37.5 hours a week so it works out to $18.50/hr. I actually feel pretty lucky to be getting this job. I interviewed with a small CPA firm and their offer was a $28 - $31K starting range.

I'll be getting the experience and supervising a couple people. I really feel that I will be a ton more marketable after a few years here. Thanks for everyone's help!

Congrats for landing a job. I must say though your
"starting Salary" is definitely a reality check for me. Am
sure am not alone in my expectation that cpa's earned
relatively higher starting pay. I know of a recent
accounting major grad making $45000 in this economy! so
please can you elaborate more.. are u a CPA?, state? work
history? promise for a trip to Rome every year? Am
studying for Reg right now and am sorry but $35k is not
really a motivation!

Government jobs sometimes pay less but you get a pension if you
stay long enough, and those are worth a lot. It is very hard to save for
your retirement in the private sector unless you really pull in big
bucks.

It is entry level. I have about 3 years in an AP/AR role, but that is considered zero for an accountant job. I went back to school as an adult and just graduated. I did not take advantage of college recruiting because I thought I had a place at my current employer. The government has some great perks, the pension is definitely one of them along with an almost nonexistent cost for medical, dental, vision, student loan forgiveness, plus many othersAfter one year I can jump to an accountant 2 for 42K, and keep going up the ladder.

When I first starting looking I hit a reality check also. I thought that starting salaries would be a lot higher, but the job market is pretty dismal. I am also living in a city where the cost of living is low.

***Everyone out there in school make sure to take advantage of the recruiting process!!! It is really essential to getting that first job!

I think 30-35k is the starting salary for a regular job in accounting I'm in FL) with no experience and just out of college. I landed my first job about 3 mos ago as staff accountant at a private university, starting at 39K. I graduated in May, no experience, but I'm studying for the CPA exam to take it next year. PA jobs start in the low 40's with no experience.

In the last few weeks all I've done is study at work or surf the web because they decided I had no experience to help them with the audit preparation and everyone seems to be stressed about this. All I did was a PPE schedule that took me 3 days and went through invoices for 2 days. Las 3-4 weeks I'm just sitting here like an idiot...lol...but they pay me..so...I keep quiet..
