I will treat this like a blog post. One of the reasons I
am making this post is because I noticed a lack of detail
of this program on websites. I hope I am doing a lot of
you a favor.
I passed the 1st round surprisingly getting an invitation
to the second round in one of the Southeast offices. I
was shocked and I quickly started researching everything
about KPMG's Inside Look program to see how it was. I
just kept reading good, positive things about it. My
favorite was when one poster on a different website
mentioned that "You have an 80% chance of getting the
offer if you were invited to the 2nd round interview". I
laugh now thinking about this.
I had never received an office visit before so I didn't
want to ruin it. I was quite prepared and mentally
motivated...little did I know. My office visit was on
October 13/14 of 2011...so about 3 weeks ago. There were
3 Inside Look programs for this office. I would say
about 15-25 kids each program.
I arrived at the hotel where I was received by 2 kind
women who handed me a folder. In it included a KPMG
notepad (I went totally Shakespeare here), an envelope
full with a debit card and other miscellaneous financial
gimmecks included in it, and most importantly a schedule
of the events planned for both days.
I walked into the trendy, chic hotel room. Having never
been in a hotel this nice, it was quite a good experience
(the bed was kind of uncomfortable). I quickly got ready
for the business casual event downstairs at the bar. I
walked into the room and started mingling with KPMG
employees, most of them were 1st years and 2nd years, so
it was a fairly young crowd.
Afterwards we walked to dinner. This was a very
intimidating experience for me. I kept my cool. I sat
down at my assigned table with partners of KPMG.
We started talking, had dinner, had a few laughs.
Overall a pleasant but intimidating experience. I did
stumble when I was awkwardly quiet while the rest
of the table (all rich, white males including the other
candidates sitting at my table) started talking about
GOLF. I thought it was a decent experience for me
though. I had a great conversation with one of the
senior managers there and got to know the interviewers
for the next day luckily.
The next day, I woke up early in the morning ready to get
this day started. We walked over to the KPMG office
where we had breakfast and mingled with some of the KPMG
partners. Sitting down at the long oval shaped table, I
didn't have much talking time with the partner sitting
closest to me. But apparently talking about a sports
documentary of a deceased former baseball legend is an
extremely fascinating topic...right? Who would have
thought!! Well anyway, they left. It was presentation
time. Lets get to know a little bit about what a great
place KPMG is!! Be prepared to hear about the excellent
international opportunities and clients of KPMG. Sigh.
It was now interview time. I got to talk with one of my
interviewers. Great conversation. I loved every bit of
it. This was a very casual interview. I went to the
next interview. Another great interview. 1-2 behavioral
questions were asked. Asked a lot of questions. And he
seemed to be intrigued by what I had to say. He showed
me his business card as well. By this point, I was
confident I would have a place at this firm...yeah.
It was lunch time now. We walked over to lunch. It was
a great lunch. The food was great. The conversations
were great. The people were great, including the one
waitress who I kept trying to look at whenever she came
by ;)
We went back to the office and filled out expense
reports. We were finished and left the office.
When I went home, I saw an email from one of the
interviewers saying it was great meeting me! Awesome. I
thought this was awesome for an interviewer to do!
I sent a thank you email to the few other people I met as
well.
I waited a week. A friend of mine had attended the
second Inside Look program. I felt gutted after this
conversation. He told me they called him the same day he
left and he had gotten an offer.
I waited another 2 weeks. I was remaining positive,
optimistic, confident yet not too confident. Just the
right confident.
Today...I received a stock rejection email from KPMG.
I emailed the head recruiter for feedback. You know...I
want to try to improve. I want to better myself. But
it's against KPMG policies to offer feedback.
Back to square one and I am now officially finished with
Public Accounting.
My message to KPMG: Thanks for the opportunity. But you
missed out on a great candidate. I know it's a
competitive field out there but I am a hard worker and I
thought I was a great fit for your firm. You know..sort
of like the missing piece in a long and complicated
puzzle. You were my first choice. Look out for my name
soon.
This is all I have to say. And now I am over it.
This was my experience.

Also had a negativ experience with KPMG. They interviewed a
boatload of students (like 30 ) for one position. Many of the students,
including myself, felt like the firm was really only interested in two
candidates, and they were just interviweing all of us to appear like they
were giving others an opportunity or something.
Most of everyone's interview followed a similar pattern: Ask the
candidate a very complicated question that takes almost the entire
interview time, or the interview dominated the conversation and barely
let the interviewee talk.
In other words, try to burn through the time because there is only two
people we care to truly interview...

This was my last interview this recruiting season I heard
back from. It really hurts having to go back to square 1
and searching for another job and going through the whole
process again.
I really felt like I fit with this firm. They were my
first choice. I am pretty sure I was on their wait list
though. They notified me after the November 1 deadline.
This means that enough people accepted their offers.
Hence my rejection.
I really think I am done with public accounting though.
This just proved that it's not for me. I guess I can
pursue what I am really interested in this time around.
I think I am convinced landing a public accounting job is
based purely on luck now.
