My suggestion:

I agree with everyone above, and would add that teaching
experience is helpful. I think it will help your chances of
getting into a PhD program, as those assitantships usually
require teaching a low level intro course also.

I would go to the local community college and adjunct there
for a couple of semesters, one class at a time, just so you
can put it on the resume as a teacher. You could even do an
online class, the prof's for that hardly do any work at
all!
