I am a sales tax auditor and interviewed with PwC in mid-Oct. I was informed in Dec that they are interested in hiring me but things are moving slow due to the holidays and end of year and that they would contact me in Feb. I was contacted in Feb and they said they are having a hiring freeze, but are still interested. I was recently contacted the beginning of this month with an update. The person in charge of my paperwork was promoted and the person I was speaking to will be taking over. They said that their still interested in hiring me, but they are having a flat year. He said that he needs to make a case to hire me. Also, I am not dealing with the recruiter, but the director. What should I make of this?

I'm just an older student (late 30s), but I do have other
work experience (worked for Citi in credit cards for a
while...yuck), and it sounds like to me if they are still
keeping in contact with you, then they're still
interested. Otherwise, they would have completely cut you
loose with a "we regret to inform you" letter. Sounds
like they had some personnel changes, and sometimes
hiring gets bogged down because of that.

That being said, I wouldn't necessarily wait on them if
you have other comparable offers. I doubt they are just
jerking you around, but the fact that they are stalling
is a little troublesome.

I work at one of the Big4 and I do not buy the "hiring freeze" line. Maybe they are not hiring as many people as in the past, but they are still hiring. Big4 has a high turnover rate, so they need to hire every year to replace those that have left, and that they expect to leave based on historical turn over rates. Maybe last year they hired 30 new starts, this year they might cut back to 20 depending.

I would keep them on the line, but I would look for other offers and if you get one, don't wait for the Big4 to get back to you.

There is a hiring freeze in the firm I am working. We
couldn't get any new people because our market considered
to be underutilized. It is good that recruiters are still
in contact with you. I am sure you have a chance.
