I think you mean enrolled agent. One point of getting the masters is to get recruited by a big firm. You also learn issues that EAs don't know like state and local taxation and international tax/transfer pricing. However, if the big firms were recruiting EAs left and right, I'd take the EA exam tomorrow.

How much work do you have to do in the MST program? Is it mostly research and papers? Im looking to finish in a year when I enter a program.

At any established and reputable program (and believe me there are many MST programs which are neither), you're going to do a lot of work. Tax is not an easy subject to learn. That being said, it wasn't that bad. In my program I worked a lot but I had a social life and partied a lot too. Which program were you looking into applying to?

Why not just become an Enrolled Agent? That proves that you know something about tax vs having a masters, which doesn't really mean a whole lot unless you can demonstrate your knowledge.

There's nothing wrong with being an EA. That being said, get your CPA license if you can. As a CPA you can do the same things an EA can, namely represent taxpayers before the IRS. From my own personal observation, there is a stigma attached to the EA license because the other employees at my Big 4 firm, particular the partners, see it as a cop-out.

DU and Golden Gate are two excellent programs. If I had to give one of them the edge I'd give it to DU (and I'm not just saying that because I'm an alumnus there) only because I think that DU has a good national reputation while Golden Gate is only really well-known in the Bay Area/California.

I do work in public accounting, getting the MST degree from DU was the best thing I ever did for myself. I a much more technically proficient than the people I started with and because of that I have gotten on some really big and interesting projects (and I'm not being conceited it's the truth).

Thanks, Very interesting.

So, How long you been working in the public accounting industry, and how is your salary like? I think you should mention where you located at,so i can really compare it..since your are a CPA and MBT.

Univ of Denver tuition was pretty high. i assume that they are private.

And where do you work now if you don't mind sharing??

DU is a private school so tuition is steep, but they have a lot of money and they are very generous with scholarships. If you're interested in going I would recommend applying and if you get in see if they will give you some sort of scholarship.

I work in the Bay Area and my salary is decent, but I'm not a CPA yet I still need the experience.
