Hi all,

I failed FAR twice and my most recent score was 69. I used Becker self-studied CDs for both my exam attempts. I watched the lectures, studied the book, did all the MC homework questions, including the supplemental ones, did all the simulations, plus the AICPA MCQs, and still managed to fail. I have probably done at least 3,000 MCQs by now. Don't know where I have gone wrong.

1) So to all those who have failed this exam before, can anyone please suggest alternative study methods and materials? I've noticed people have recommended Gleim, Wiley, Yaeger on the forum. Which one is the best? Also, should I just purchase the practice questions CD, or the book as well? I worry that if I get the book as well, it will be like I am studying all the material again. Or do you guys think I can just study the practice CD, and by studying the answer explanations to the MCQs on the practice CD, it will help me to understand the exam concepts that I apparently do not understand or have a good grasp on.

2) Also, I was thinking about attending Becker live class this time around and maybe it will help me to learn better since I can ask the instructors questions if I do not understand a concept. But Becker's live schedules do not offer FAR in the time frame that I need, which is the Oct-Dec time frame. Does anyone know of any good CPA prep courses out there that offer live class instructions in the Chicago area?

Thanks in advance to everyone for your valuable advices. They're much appreciated.

Cloudlesssky-

I will try to make this post brief and not go on a tangent.  I think I have the perfect combination for you.  The first time I sat for FAR I used Gleim. The presentation of the material was very dry and uninteresting, and it took me a LONG time to get through the material once- didn't get a chance to go over it a 2nd time- Gleim approach is very time consuming.  For those using Gleim and it's your first time sitting give yourself 2-2.5 months of study time!  6 weeks of Gleim doesn't cut it.  Now I'm using Becker and attending live courses.

1.  In your case, purchase the FAR software from Gleim.  Don't waste your time buying the book because you have enough information to teach you the material that you don't need anymore teaching materials...you need to practice doing MCQ's and having presented to you in different ways.  Becker tends to focus on one angel with their questions and IF you DON'T read the explainations to every MCQ, I feel that I don't get the full benefit of the study material.  Sometimes in those explainations there are topics that click me that didn't "click" when watching the videos or reading the book.  If you have not taken this strategy, I stronglyt suggest it.

2. Becker live class is nothing more then a babysitting service.  It's for those people who are highly distracted individuals that can't sit down in one spot on their own and wtch the videos.  Aside from making some new friends, I haven't gotten a thing from the Becker Review Live class.

3.  I would like to add...I have heard from more then one source that Becker's Final Review may be very beneficial.  I can't stress the importantance of learning the material, but our goal here is to pass the exam.  From what I understand, this is the perfect tool to achieve this goal.  I have all 4 sections of the Final Review and I only used it for REG so far....I will say this...I don't think there were any magical MCQ's or Simulatioin presentations that made me or broke me for the exam.  From that aspect, the program was nothing special.  I will say this...it was very valuable to me because I think I saved hours of study time because I was able to directly focus on the important topics.  There is so much material taught that it's overwhelming and it's tough to focus on the important stuff.

BTW...I have the Gleim online course and the whole package that came with that 2007 version.  I think I did very well on REG this time around...don't know if I passed but I was much better at the material.  I did all of Becker material and then I did the MCQ's in the key sections on the Gleim software and if I didn't do that...I would have done as well as I think I did (based on research I did after the exam), if I had not done that!

I think the combination of Becker and the Gleim MCQ's for REG & BEC is essential for success- at least for me.  I havent' sat for FAR yet and finished going the through the Becker course but....I kind of think that Final Review is a good product.  Now, this is what I heard...and I never take the things that others tell me as gospel, but I will vouch for this...I have deeply regreted not listening to certain advice from others regarding this exam.  If I am correct, it is worth $400 easily for this Final Review and to never have to look at this crap ever again.  Again, it's about passing the exam!  When I hear other people say to me that they are sorry they spent so much time with passmaster, something is clearly up! You have nothing to lose with this purchase, you still get several hundred MCQ's and you still have to study the crap anyway.

Good luck and I hope this post helps you.

Hey cloud,

This will actually be my 5th attempt at FAR so don't feel bad at all.  I have received the following scores in order  72, 72, 74, 74.  The two 74's in a row were the most demeaning because I had the other three sections passed and because I couldn't pass FAR I ended up having to take AUD over again.  I passed it with a 92, but if I don't pass FAR this window then I have to take BEC over again.  When are you going to take FAR again?

Don't screw around...just buy the final review.  It's worth $400 easily!  I didn't use it yet, but I am in Becker's live class with a bunch of people who have taken FAR and passed it on the first shot with this course.  And...no...I'm not talking about a bunch of 4.0 students that passed it!  TRUST ME!

Kccpa, FutureCPA77, passitalready - I think we should from a club and help each other out! It seems like most people who posted their scores on here all scored in the 80s to 90s range.

Kccpa, I really admire your perseverance in trying FAR 5X. When I found out I failed FAR the 2nd time, I cried so hard for two days and got my eyes all swollen from all the crying. I was very close to giving it up altogether because I got so sick of stuyding all the time and not being able to relax when I got home from work. I plan on re-taking FAR the next testing window, most likely the end of November, as it is much harder for me to find time to study for the next 1.5 months due to tax season and have to stay late at work all the time.

Passitalready, thanks for your advice. I am thinking about getting Gleim CD, but perhaps I will take your advice and purchase the Becker final review as well.

We can put together a study group.  I will be sitting before 10/28/08.  Since I'm sitting before you cloud, wait on the final review.  I'll let you know if it's really gold or not!  In the meantime, get Gleim...you won't be sorry!  Gleim will really zero in on the topics you know and don't.  You do well on the Gleim CD you know your stuff!
