I have since
downloaded your ebook which has some great insights.
One of the
reasons I think I didn't get an interview is because I
didn't follow your tips
on getting your foot in the door. I don't think I even
talked to a single
actual recruiter, just mostly new hires who hadn't even
started working
yet. Another reason I think they passed on me, however,
is because I feel
like I'm lacking in experience, especially compared to
my classmates at
my highly competitive school. For the past 3 or so
years I've been
working as a bartender to support myself and pay for
school and between
work and school, I don't have much time for anything
else. My GPA,
however, is very high.

Should I be very worried when recruiting for jobs comes
around next
year? Or do you think it's mostly the economy mixed
with the fact that I
didn't make a great impression on the people who
mattered? Do firms
usually hire more people for actual jobs than for
internships? And if I
don't get a job, how long should I wait before trying
again?

Answers to these questions would be greatly
appreciated!

First off, glad to hear you liked the eBook. The good
news is that the firms typically hire more full time
employees than they do interns. Rather than hiring more
interns that full hires and weeding out all but the
best, they usually hire 1/3 of the full time hires as
interns and give 100% of them an offer to come back full
time. So, don't worry if you didn't get an interview -
it by no means indicates that you won't be hired for a
full time position.

The economy definitely is playing a role right now in
making the competition for the positions even greater
than usual. It is difficult to forecast at this point
how the market will be next year. The fact that you
have a strong GPA is a major plus. However, it is
common to not get an interview if you don't follow the
proper channels and protocol. I know this can be really
frustrating. Follow the steps in the book next time and
you should have better luck.

Big 4 Guru,

Thank you for the book, it will be a great help.  I did want to ask you your opinion on my specific situation, however.

I am a Junior accounting major with a 3.5 at a public school in ohio (Miami) that is known for it's business school, and we pump out so many accounting majors a year, it has to be our biggest major, although i'm not sure on that.

This fall I interviewed with PwC for an internship here on campus and made it to the second round which means an office visit (so for me a five hour drive home to Cleveland, my school is near Cincinnati).  I went home and went to the $40 steak dinner the night before, and the office visit the next day, yada yada, and I found out a week later I didn't get it.

I told them that I would be going to school for a fifth year to meet my 150 hour requirement, so they said try again next year for an internship.  But now I have realized that I can get 150 and graduate in my fourth year (next year) if I take 3 classes this summer.

I plan on going for the full time job next fall but the thing that is worrying me is I have no internship anywhere lined up for this summer.  I am still looking but if not i would go back to my normal summer job, landscaping.

My resume has a few extracurricular activites and a lot of part time jobs i've had since high school. (store, restaurant, landscaping)

Will the big 4 even look at someone with no internship experience anywhere for a full time position?

Thanks for your ebook purchase.  Here is my advice on your specific situation.  The fact that you're willing to take 3 extra classes during the summer shows drive and motivation and graduating a year early would give you a great jumpstart on your career.  This would be obvious to the Big 4 and should make up for not having the internship on your resume.  The fact that you made it to the second round of interviews for the internship means that you will have a great job of getting hired for a full time position.  There is a common misconception that landing a full time position without an internship is imposible.  I'm going to leave a post following this to clear that up.

Thanks for the question and please keep me posted.
