Check this out; http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpalic.htm

Experience Requirements, end of the page

Do I understand it right? For NY state it doesn't have to be auditing experience to get an initial license

Yes, beginning in July of this year, NYS now allows any experience working under a cpa as qualifying experience. It does not have to be auditing experience only anymore.

For some reason every website I've looked up on the subject mentions the time limit for educational requirements (3 years after passing in MA), but none mentions a time limit for work experience. Either there's no time limit (unlikely) or the issue doesn't come up often?

It all depends on your state board's rules. Your best bet is to call them and ask if you have questions.
