I think that comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. Do you want to be a lawyer or do you want to be an accountant? If you become a tax lawyer you will probably never get your CPA, but will have to pass a grueling 3 years of law school and pass the bar.
Are you still in college full-time or are you working now (and what's your age)? If you have great grades, and haven't started working yet, sure go to law school and try to be a lawyer that focuses on tax. However, if you need an income to support yourself and/or a family, do you really think that you could do what takes people three years to do full-time at night after coming home from work?
How good do you think you are? While accounting is competitive, it's one of the few jobs that you can get a decent salary with just an undergrad degree. Plus, it's a normal middle class job with average joes who did their homework in college. However, getting a job as a tax lawyer is an all or nothing deal for Type A's. You'll probably need great grades from a top law school to even get an interview. But you'll be rewarded with a very lucrative career (and long hours).
So, what do YOU want out of life?
