Sorry to bring this up. On the cost/benefit concept, do you think that the
benefit that you will get from MBA is more than the cost, I'm talking about
the knowledge not the recruiting point of view.
Thanks

Honestly, I'm going to have to say no to this. Especially if you already
have a business background. For better or worse, a huge part of the
value in getting to a top 30 school is who you meet and what
companies that school gives you the opportunity to interview with.
IMO, much of the actual knowledge taught in business school can be
just as easily learned in the real world. This is ESPECIALLY true if
you're an auditor with relatively large clients.

My long shot schools are Duke and UVA, my fairly
confident school is UNC, my solid targets are Vanderbilt
and Wake Forest, and Ohio State is my "back up".Ohio
State is actually ranked higher than Vanderbilt AND Wake
Forest on many lists, but when I really dig deep into the
statistics, I don't see it. Given the choice, I don't
know anyone who'd rather go to Ohio State than Vanderbilt
- but maybe for geographic reasons. All the schools,
though, have on campus recruiting from Chase, Goldman
Sachs, GE, PG, Philip Morris, Nissan, etc, etc... though,
so really they're all "worth it". And they all have
fantastic ROI's. What about you? Where are you
attending? I should note, the reason my school
selections seem a bit odd is because geography is a huge
factor for me. I don't want to move out west, and I
don't want to move to the north east. If you wouldn't
mind, could you PM me some of your stats? I'm just
curious as to how I match up with a fellow accountant (i
assume) that got into a top 15. |

I'm going to Duke for my MBA. As for the cost/benefit for
pure knowledge, I have to agree that it really isn't
about that. You are going to have to drop six figures for
the top schools. You can learn the same stuff with a few
hundred dollars worth of books. The value is in the
degree, the recruiting, and of course the connections. It
is unreal what sorts of backgrounds some of my classmates
have. I'm from a small firm and I'm a CPA (not exactly
normal in the MBA as there are few in my program).
Sitting with people that worked at some of the biggest
companies in the world is a bit different.
Also, Duke (Fuqua) just moved up the ranks with Financial
Times (#15 in the world) and US News (#12 in the US) MBA
rankings. That definitely got noticed in our program!

Jonus, would you might exploring your background a little more? I
actually just decided to leave public accounting to be an analyst with a
world wide leader in the energy services industry. I didnt feel like the
toil at my small regional firm was going to be enough to push me over
the edge at a top 20 school - so I decided to jump ship for a soon-to-
be fortune 500 company.
Are you from a small firm, and were you originally from the Durham
area?
When I was doing research into my programs, I wasn't seeing
ANYTHING promising with regards to my public accounting experience
being a big help, other than maybe serving as additional proof that I'm
solid in quantitative areas. Also, I'm only 24 - are you closer to the
average age for Duke entrants, and did you simply manhandle the
GMAT?
Thanks
