The test facilitator at Prometric today made me take my gum out before the exam.  I rebutted with the fact that the AICPA does not prohibit gum in the list of prohbited items in the AICPA Candidate Bulletin: http://www.nasba.org/nasbaweb/NASBAWeb.nsf/FNAL/CandidateBul letin?opendocument.  She then explained that people have left their gum in the testing center and it has been a "mess" to clean up.  She seemed irritated and ornery, and I didn't want to raise my blood pressure any higher before going into the test room... so I conceded and spit out my gum.

Now, I tend to consider myself to be a courteous and responsible gumchewer.  I dispose of my gum in its original wrapper that always ends up in a trash can.  One reason I like chewing gum while taking a test is b/c it allows me to harness any natural stress and focus on the task at hand.  I really could've used some gum today, but I didn't let that ruin my test.  However, I will never be able to quantify the effect of my lack of gum on my final score tbd.  Does anybody know the official gum rule?  I think this lady was just having a bad day...

:-), what a hilarious topic!

I also find that the chewing gum is a great stress reliever! But I was told by other candidates not to have on me or chew gum during the exam. I've recently red an article (NY Times?, don't remember exactly) on colleges' struggle to combat electronic cheating. They said that, when a student chews gum during a test he makes almost the same facial expressions as if he were talking using a wireless device (means cheating). Thus, it's very difficult to distinguish an honest student from a dishonest one by simply using video-monitoring devices in classes or test centers. The simpliest solution then - PROHIBIT everything!!!        My 2 cents :-)))))))

OK, the magic of Google helped me find that article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/06/education/06cheat.html

"No gum is allowed during an exam: chewing could disguise a student’s speaking into a hands-free cellphone to an accomplice outside."

"When a proctor sees something suspicious, he records the student’s real-time work at the computer and directs an overhead camera to zoom in, and both sets of images are burned onto a CD for evidence."

I think it has to do with blowing bubbles.  AKA poping your gum.  Someone was doing that while I was testing.  It is very rude and annoying.  You should not be allowed to chew gum in the testing room.

Lets be respectful and courteous to other people who are trying to pass a test.  Not just the cpa exam.  Every exam is important.  Therefore, leave the gum at home.  It disturbs the candiates

Yeap, the noise could be a reason too. I remember taking my GRE exam (a while ago) at a Prometric Center in a foreign country: I got extremely sick and I was caughing continuously, but I couldn't reschedule the exam. I still feel guilty and sorry for all other people that took the exam that day. The test center's supervisor gave them all some noise-canceling speakerphones :-).
