my retention technique is to make cliff notes on top of cliff notes.
first i write notes as listening to lectures
then as I miss problems I track the problems i missed
i then write "bromides" or short notes that capture what i missed or important concepts to memorize
i then take the sims and then the exams and write learnings from there.
i then redo all the problems i missed and the prac exams.
i then consolidate them all together and highlight the common things i am missing.
before the actual exam in the morning i just keep writing free form as many conceptual things that I need to keep straight.
once i walk into the exam i start just writing as many of those things on my scratchsheet.
everything after that is your understanding of the concepts.
