I agree with Jorge on the MACC. If you could get in and get
a high gpa it would certainly set you apart and could tell
a good story about you personally.

I always thought that advisory (aka consulting?) was the hardest to get into. Consultants have to be very smart problem solvers. I met some guys back in college who were recruited into consulting firms, one of the guys was an engineering major with really high GPA.
I always thought audit was the easiest to get into out of audit, tax and consulting.

My resume is going read something along these lines. Please note that I will have an accounting certificate GPA higher than my econ GPA.
Certificate in Accountancy 3.7 GPA
Relevant coursework: Financial and Managerial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Audit, Advanced Financial Accounting...
BA, Economics 3.1 GPA
Relevant Coursework: Industrial Organization, Business Communications, Micro/Macro Economics Theory, Econometrics...
Worse come to worse, I'll get rejected from all the public accounting firms and I'll stay in private industry for a while, slowly climbing from staff accountant, to accounting manager, assistant controller, controller, etc. This climb will be slow because we all know its a slow climb without public accounting experience. Then a few years down the line I'll get a MAcc and try to break into public accounting again. By that time through I'll probably be making significantly more money than a first year Big 4 auditor so I don't know if I would want to make the move, especially if I were to go from being a 32 year old accounting manager to a 1st year auditor getting bossed around by 24 year old Big 4 audit managers.

The reason why I say try advisory or consulting is because you have little or no shot with audit. You need to know how the hiring system works with Big4. Big4 hire audit recruits through campus hire 99% of the time, and since you're doing your 150 hours through a extension program, it is very unlikely any large accounting firm will give you a shot. Unless you land a job at s small PA firm, and work for 2 years, and apply at Big4 as experienced hire.
I was hired by KPMG to their advisory department, and from personal experience, you have better chance with advisory or consulting. I turned it down and decided to go with a startup. We both live in the Bay Area so you should know IT companies here really take care of their employees.

I am almost in the sameboat as the OP. I am currently doing MBA in
accounting because my BS was in MIS. I been working in IT for 5 years and
would like to work for Big 4 as an auditor or an IT auditor. How do you guys
think I can do that if my school is not a recruiting school for the big 4 here in
Dallas?
