@cpawishes: What career track id you took to the big 4? The reason I ask you this is because I'm doing a Master in Taxation at Baruch fulltime while working part-time in retail and I'm wondering if the recruiters will look down on retail experience (non-accounting).

im not completely sure what you're asking, but I got my MACC from a SUNY. As far as the retail experience, I don't think they would look down on that. Obviously, it's not as good as doing some business internship, but it definitely doesn't hurt that you have some work experience (even though its not accounting related)
btw, Master in Taxation, you're going to get paid! starting salary in nyc for big 4 is around 69k. my friend has his masters in tax but he works sundays...ouch

I was asking how did you get recruited to the Big 4 (SUNY) and what type of work experience/internships you had?
I'm trying to get my foot in the door for fall recruiting but I need network with more people from the big 4 (preferably lower level people). I'm trying to reach out to people on linkedin but I know it will be difficult because I don't know many people there.

Oh sorry I misunderstood. I had one summer accounting internship
(non public) after my junior year. I was not involved with any clubs,
fraternities in school. To be honest with you, I'm not too sure how
useful it would be to network with lower level employees at the big 4.
To my understanding, they don't really take recommendations from
people lower than the manager level. your best bet is to use schools
career resource center in landing interviews. That's how I got all my
interviews. From what I hear, Baruch has one of the best career
centers in the city. Hope this answers your question.

I'll be starting in January of next year without having
done an internship - how difficult will it be jumping into
busy season cold?
Do I have any chance of completing the CPA exam within my
first year?
This will differ from firm to firm, but I expect they will
be somewhat similar - is there any kind of network for new
hires to contact each other? I only know a few people in
the city and would rather room up with others in my class
than go random. Is this common?
