Ok this is what it is...You must file if your income is
greater than personal exemption + standard deduction
(additional if 65 over or blind). i believe this is $5700
for 2011?

B is more clear now         &nb sp;

I got this info fro IRS publication, it says that

a single dependent , if he not either 65 or older or blind must file if he has unearned income of more than $950 or earned income of more than $5500.

Based on this i think B is right.

dutch74,

I don't understand how come the personal exemption +
standard deduction becomes 5,700? the personal exemption
for 2011 is 3,700 and the standard deduction for single
status is 5800 which will add up $9,500 (the minimum
requirement to file for 2011)

Assuming she is listed as a dependent on her parents tax
return (she is 20- full time student). So she doesn't get
exemption for herself. 0 + standard deduction for the
year determines if she files or not. The questions say
she makes 8000 income from a job, which is considered
EARNED income. 8000 > 5800, so she must file.

Also you must file if your unearned income is greater
than $950.

If she wasn't listed as a dependent on her parents then
she can claim her self as a personal exemption. Then the
minimum would be 9500.

Again i feel like, CpareviewforFREE aren't very clear

From the South-Western Federal Taxation textbook:

FILING REQUIREMENTS FOR DEPENDENTS:

Computation of the gross income filing requirement for an individual who can be claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return is subject to more complex rules. Such an individual MUST file a return if he or she has ANY of the following:

*Earned income only and gross income that is more than the standard deduction (including any additional SD) that the individual is allowed for the year. SD for single in 2011 is $5,800.

*Unearned income only and gross income of more than $950 plus any additional SD that the individual is allowed for the year.

*Both earned and unearned income and gross income of more than the larger of $950 or the sum of earned income plus $300 (but limited to the applicable basic SD), plus any additional SD that the individual is allowed for the year.

Thus, the filing requirement for a dependent who has no unearned income is the total of the BASIC SD plus any additional SD, which includes both the additional deduction for blindnness and the deduction for being age 65 or older. For example, the filing requirement for a single dependent who is under age 65 is $5,800 (in 2011, the amount of the basic SD.
