Here's my question and answer's by the AICPA regarding
the duplicate questions. I'll update this once I get my
final answer in case anyone's interested, since they are
going to investigate my exam for a duplicate.
My first Question sent to the AICPA:
I recently took FAR and noticed I got the
same question more than once (exact same question and
answer choices) in different testlets. The same instance
happened in prior exams last quarter as well, more
noticeably in the new content areas outlined in the CSO's
(i.e. duplicated IFRS questions/answers). According to
other candidates who've taken the exam this year, they
have been getting duplicate questions also, sometimes
several duplicated questions. Are these duplicates graded
and weighted equally, or is one thrown out since it's a
duplicate? It doesn't seem fair if they are both graded
and weighted if you get the question wrong, but could be
great if you got them right (essentially getting a free
pass on the repeated question since you knew the answer).
If both are graded it could 'jip' the candidate out of a
passing score if they were close to 75 because an
alternate question wasn't asked in place of the
duplicate. I'd appreciate any guidance you can give me
and perhaps post this situation in the FAQ area since I
know multiple candidates have had the same anomaly during
their exams.
Their response (not including all their disclosure and
misc info):
You stated that you received the same question
more than once. Similar questions may be in the test;
however, they are not identical. We have special coding
and technology controls in place to ensure that questions
are not repeated within a testlet. Overall, each
examination is constructed with a defined balance of
content from various topics in our content guidelines.
Responses to pretest questions are never taken into
account in calculating candidate scores. Pretest
questions are included in every Examination (they may be
multiple-choice questions, task-based simulations, or
written communication tasks) only for the purpose of
collecting data. The data are needed to assess the
quality of the questions, and to collect scoring
information for later use when the questions become
operational items
My next question in response to their answer:
Please note my question was regarding
duplicate questions within the same exam , not the same
testlet. Each instance was a different testlet, but the
same exam. Have you reviewed the exam I was given to see
if they were in fact exact duplicate questions? I am
fairly certain they were exactly the same question and
answer choices, which is the same situation many other
candidates have come across during this testing year.
Their next response:
As stated before, there should not be any
exact duplicate items. However, we will be happy to check
your individual exam when you supply us with the
information we need. We will need your Examination
Section Identification number and the number of the item
in each testlet that you think is duplicated in order to
investigate further.
I replied with my info (and pointed out that in their
answer they only said "ensure that questions are not
repeated in the same testlet" not exam)so hopefully they
will read the questions not just their coded numbers for
each question, because I'm pretty sure it's an error with
the way they numbered their questions which is why the
program isn't picking up the duplicates.

You're right on about that. There was this issue on several of my sections. I am almost positive that I had the same question at least twice, sometimes three times during my exam.

the first time i sat for the exams in Jan/Feb i got
duplicates on every section i took and positive they were
exactly the same, but again they were in different
testlets, but within the same exam. i haven't heard back
yet, so hopefully this means they are actually examining
the problem. i'm hoping it gets resolved before my next
exam on Tuesday (Audit).

Unrelated - but I don't think you should have used the word
'jip' in your communication to the AICPA - it is kind of a derogatory term.

I appeared for my Audit exam last month and i was actually surprised to see duplicate question. I got it in my first testlet and then i got the same question on my third testlet twice. So in all i got this question thrice on my exam. But eventhough the question was same, the choices were not same in all three questions. In the end I was ok with it as i knew the correct answer :)
