I'm soooo close...

I passed the CPA exam as a WA state candidate.  I've worked as an accountant in industry for 6 years so I meet the experience requirement.  However, I need a CPA with an active license to sign off on my experience (my boss was going to sign off until he realized his license had gone inactive).  For a WA-state candidate, you can pay a CPA to sign off on your experience.  It sounds strange but at this point I'm willing to do it.  Does anyone know about this?  How can I find an active CPA willing to review and confirm my experience to sign off on me if I'm will to pay him/her a fee?

Per FAQ-  http://www.cpaboard.wa.gov/CertificateLicense/verifying_cpa. shtml

Can I pay a licensed CPA to verify that I had experience supporting the attainment of the competencies?

Yes.

Norrime do you have any follow up story?

Norrime, I will soon be in the exact same situation as you are (one more exam to pass).

I plan to approach a reputable local CPA firm - a smaller firm, with some very experienced CPAs, the people that will want to talk to me about certification as well as give me some career development advice. I will approach them and explain clearly what I need. Cannot wait to see the reaction...

I also have six years in corporate accounting (two years in Toronto and four years in Seattle). It might help that the CFO of the corporation that I worked with is a CPA - inactive, unfortunately - but the CPA that will sign might feel more comfortable consulting with him.

Did you have a lot of trouble switching to public from industry?

Unfortunately I still haven't had any luck.  I'm reaching out further into my network.  If I find a way to get this requirement completed, I'll post it here.  If anybody else has any luck, please let us know as well.

Good Luck Trexseattle, please let us know how it goes.  It might be worth pointing out to the firm that Washington State Board of Accountancy addresses these experience affidavits as below.

"The verifying CPA is not required to verify, and in fact does not verify, that the candidate has obtained any level of competency. The verification statement was carefully worded to ensure that the CPA's verification did not force CPAs to verify a candidate's competency. Additionally, the instructions are further clarified by stating: "Note: The CPA does not verify that the candidate has attained the competencies. The burden of proof of the validity of the Experience Affidavit is on the candidate."

The experience verification process has been required for 20+ years. The decision as to whether or not to verify a candidate's experience is, and always has been, a personal and/or business decision."

Have you thought of asking one of your former college professors?
