Get your MACC, not

have some connections.

It's also difficult to get into the Big 4 unless you
start out as an intern for them.  Accordng to data I
found, 70-90% of new hires at the Big 4 were originally
interns.  So please do not assume that getting a Macc is
a ticket to the Big 4.

1) Funny you should
say that, considering I got my offer to one of the Big 4
without having been an intern before last fall from
campus recruiting. 2) I never said, if you get your MAcc,
you'll get an offer. Bottomline, if you want to get into
Big 4, especially at new associate level, your best bet
is from on campus recruiting. 3) Thanks for calling me
out, glad you just assumed I didn't know what I was
talking about.

ding ding, I rarely see any new hires who did NOT come
from university recruiting.

You actually have a great chance of getting a Big 4
offer, but it depends on your region. Obviously areas
where there are a lot of schools who offer accounting
programs, there is going to be a saturation of recruits
at the larger firms. Firms are moving towards hiring
interns of course, but the number of interns working the
summer or spring before their MACC program begins is
still on the low side. Certainly not enough to fill their
hiring pool.

What if someone wants to work for a Fortune 500?  Is it important to do on campus recruitment, or can one get hired by applying online?

And fla_examiner mentioned that firms are only hiring 0-3 people on campus.  So how is anyone going to get a job with those kinds of numbers?  Aren't the jobs all going to go to those with connections?  I have no connections.  I can't even network myself into a paper bag, never mind a job.

This is where you need heavy networking and a solid connection. It could actually be more competitive than the big 4 or any public firm I interviewed with.

A bunch of people at my school aren't getting jobs.  The MAcc program enrollment has skyrocketed, because students don't know what else to do.  A lot of interns are not being hired, when it used to be unheard of that firms around here didn't offer them full-time employment.  I have noticed some of the firms that usually did 1 semester interns and then make full-time offers, are instead bringing back the same interns for this busy season, simply because they couldn't secure full-time employment elsewhere.

Inside connections are great, and I used one to get my first job, but guess what?  They didn't have any problem giving me the boot regardless.  I got my new job on my own and it feels great.  Being that it is the middle of busy season, I think it's gonna be really hard to secure a public accounting job before next fall.  Your best bet is to just send out a resume to every CPA firm in any city you are willing to work in.  That's what I did.  Don't send them out to crap looking firms though, unless you are willing to work for them.

I hear a lot of people are joining up for Americore and the army. They have too many people now they don't want anymore.

Also graduates are roaming my old university because they have nothing else to do.
