Doesn't the below answer ignore the mid-qtr convention that comes into play if 40% of assets are put into service during Q4?

Thanks.

Question CPA-02197

With regard to depreciation computations made under the general MACRS method, the half-year convention

provides that:

a. One-half of the first year's depreciation is allowed in the year in which the property is placed in service, regardless of when the property is placed in service during the year, and a half-year's depreciation is allowed for the year in which the property is disposed of.

b. The deduction will be based on the number of months the property was in service, so that one-half month's depreciation is allowed for the month in which the property is placed in service and for the month in which it is disposed of.

c. Depreciation will be allowed in the first year of acquisition of the property only if the property is placed in service no later than June 30 for calendar-year corporations.

d. Depreciation will be allowed in the last year of the property's economic life only if the property is disposed of after June 30 of the year of disposition for calendar-year corporations.

Explanation

Choice "a" is correct. The half-year convention provides that one-half of the first year's depreciation is allowed in the year in which the property is placed in service, regardless of when the property is placed in service during the year, and a half-year's depreciation is allowed for the year in which the property is disposed of.

I see where you're getting confused.  Although it would be changed to mid-quarter if 40% or more are put into service in Q4, it specifically asks about the half-year convention and more specifically, what's true about it.  In this case, you have to assume that 40% or more doesn't come into play or else it would be mid-quarter.  In addition to this, none of the other 3 answers are correct.

I think it might just be a case of reading too far into the question.  I've done that several times.  Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck!

@GVen:  I agree with Entourage.  C & D are flat out wrong answers.  B is if you were answering another question.  A is correct as it is answering the "call of the question".  You did very well on FAR, stick to the question beign asked and you're golden.
