Hi everyone,
I was just rejected for PwC summer 2011 audit in the NYC office. I am really curious as to why I was not given an offer. I thought my senior manager interview went well, my partner interview went alright and the senior I interviewed with went alright as well. I definitely think my senior manager interview was the best out of all of them and went pretty well. My partner interview was just alrite. Does the partner have the most say in who gets an offer? The first thing he did was give me his business card, which I sent a thank you note to after. I sent everyone a thank you note and received none. I also sent my host a thank you note as he gave me a card at the end.
I am a junior at UIUC and on pace to graduate with 150 hrs in May 2012. 3.41 GPA with part time job and EC's. I wore a dark charcoal suit with a white w/ blue check shirt with a navy tie. Also polished my shoes and no cufflinks/cologne. I am 5' 11'' asian male and I am not socially awkward. I got along with my host pretty well and had good conversation with the pwc full times that were there.
The ONLY thing I could think of that could have "hurt" me during my office visit was that the senior associate that i interviewed with was sick, didnt shake my hand ( she told me she didnt want to infect me though), and she wasnt feeling well during the interview. During my partner interview, he said that I wrote a partner's name wrong in my cover letter. I apologized for the typo but I know that it wasn't a typo bc when i came home checked my cover letter and the partner's name/email from the card he gave me at career fair and I was actually right. there was no typo. I knew everything on my resume which is what he asked me questions off of. There were no behavior questions at all. I put numbers down on my resume and if i wrong $500 for a fundraising event, i said about $500 when i answered his questions. Should i have been more assertive with numbers from my resume?
Any help from anybody would be greatly appreciated! I am not bitter but just really confused! Thank you guys so much!

Big 4 positions are competitive. You could have the best interview you could hope for but still be beat out by the competition. Firms don't invite candidates equal in amount to the number of openings they have.
The thank you notes are nice, but do realize that nearly all of the candidates send them. Business cards been given out is nearly a given as well.
If I was in your shoes, I wouldn't be nearly as upset about not getting the offer as I would be if I had a bad interview. You at least know there was nearly nothing else you could have done, and you were simply beat out by the competition.

There is no way to really know from you just telling us. I
would have to talk to you or see the interviews...
The fact that you said some interviews were admittedly
alright might be telling...
Why did you mention a partner at all in your cover letter?
I know some partners who hate when candidates name drop at
all. To the point where they will dismiss a candidate.

I know how you feel. I also had a 2nd round interview with PwC in NYC although for tax full time and was rejected. Like you, I thought the interviews went well. I have a 3.8 GPA and worked full time at a small firm while getting my master's full time.
The partner and director did not ask me any behavioral questions but the HR interviewer asked me a ton. I thought the interview went best with her because even though I hate interviewing with HR, I think they do know how to interview and evaluate unbiasedly. I thought the other two interviews went well if not okay but you never know with partners and directors. It's a crapshoot you may think it went well but you never know.

Try next year with other Big 4 firms. Become an officer in accounting society, if possible
