I don't think having big 4 experience is that much of an advantage either if you are no longer working there. I guess compared to other laid-off accountants they are better off. But as I have learned, you need to have hands on matching experience for the job and anything else is not that important. I think things have changed a lot since the massive layoffs at big 4s. Now there are a bunch of big 4 people on the job market so it really is not valued as much.

Another thing is, having a CPA can trump someone from big 4 with no CPA.

I just read an article out of philly about this guy who was from the Big 4 with a CPA, MBA from Columbia, former high level exec who lost his investment advisory job last year and had not landed any interviews for 1 year. So, its not really a matter of having big 4 or not.

I have a CPA and my interviews have been scarce.  I just think if you had a chance it is better to work at Big 4 than not.  It may not be the deciding factor but if employers have 200 applicants for a position, it might increase you chances slightly.

Even if its increases your chances by 10%, i still think it would be worth it.  Every little thing helps in this economy.

I assume the person was in audit based on his career. Tax people usually stay in tax for their career and once you reach a certain level in tax, it's pretty safe but the work is pretty complicated, more than regular accounting.

I think once you get to the interview stage, everyone is treated the same.

Honestly, most people nowadays do not have job security. Even if you are some director level person in  Fortune 500, you could still get laid off and not being able to find a job. I feel like no matter how high you go, you still need to prove yourself all the time, there is no point in time when you can relax. That's how corporate america works.
