007CPA, well, many people over 50 get fired. Sorry, laid off. Many companies still have age discrimination (thankfully, not all). What if you don't make a partner by the time your are 45? How many partners do you know? What are your chances? You are forgetting that the federal government is huge, and you can move to pretty much any location and any Department. Yes, it takes a long time to get to even a Manager position, but who cares? My Mom was a CEO, and I believe it was absolutely horrible: too much stress, too many responsibilities, too many games and dirt. I care about my stable income and a 40-hour work week with the best benefits I have ever heard of. Especially, nowadays when not too many employers want to sponsor any retirement plans. I don't like ups and downs. I don't care about money (I mean "big money"). I would say that the government (and so are multinational corporations) is as perfect for me as it only gets. I will be extremely sad if I get fired.
You have a different mentality, and it's great. Sometimes, I envy people who can just "work, work, work" and feel happy.

lelik and 007CPA, you both need to look at both sides of the argument...
I now work at a Big4, but for 8 months prior to that I worked for the Government. There are many types of people, I for one, am someone who runs on efficiency, therefore the Big4 "lifestyle" does not bother me. There are other types of people who are completely inefficient, but they have fun doing it.
Take my roommate for example, if he needed to buy a useful item, perhaps an iron to press his shirts, he would drive to K-Mart (at 5:15 PM when he gets done work at Government), walk around, find his iron (without doing any research **pretty box art**) walk around a little more, pay for it (typically more than online e-tailers like amazon.com) and pay tax, and think how great this new iron is and be COMPLETELY happy.
Now there is me for example, if I needed to buy a useful item, perhaps an iron as well, I would get off work at 7:30PM (man that was a rough day at Big4, building a phenomenal resume) drive home, and walk in the front door. Oh, my new iron is here. You see, I am efficient, government people are not, they don't have to be because they work "37.5" hours a week. Who even measures hours in .50 intervals? I used resources to make a selection on amazon.com, i.e. hundreds of reviews, selected an iron, more than likely paid less than anywhere else, had it shipped for free (i was smart and bought a year of amazon prime and it gives 2 day free shipping), AND did not pay any sales tax AND did not waste my time walking around a store with a bunch of blue-collar workers...
MANY PEOPLE will agree with me and MORE PEOPLE will disagree with me, typically, most people will group themselves one way or another, but all in all, everyone has their own way that they want to do stuff, mine is just the right way ;)

Were you efficient enough to pay proper use tax on your iron?
There are hardworking individuals in both government and public
accounting positions. In the couple years I have been at a big 4 I typically
work a 40-45 hour week with increasing hours during tax season. If a
persons only motivation for being in public accounting is compensation, you
have entered the wrong profession. I would take the stability of a
government salary/benefits over big 4 pay any day.

While I do love amazon.com and make most of my non-food and non-clothing purchases online, I love the example of getting "free shipping" by way of a $79 Amazon Prime membership. :) I guess if you use it enough.....
