CPAKillah, ha-ha, I tend to agree with you if we talk about the lower level accounting (data entry, reconciliations, etc.). Though, many people just don't want to do accounting, and the accounting (or lack of it) can ruin any company. I absolutely agree with you about the taxes. Many of them are absurd (difficulty, meaning, etc.).

LOL.  Threads like this are proof the accounting profession has us by the balls.  At least lawyers and Investment bankers can make some decent pay for all those hours.

Well, people, I think it's not the accounting profession, it's the American Dream and the whole screwed up culture and work ethics of the old generations. I personally don't care about any of this stuff. I hate competition at work.

For example, in Germany you are not allowed to work over 10 hours per day. If you do and someone finds out, the company will be fined. My company used to send us reminders constantly. I worked 35-hour weeks, and it was considered normal. Many of my friends worked 20 hours a week and got full benefits (vacation, medical insurance, etc.). Maternity leave in many European countries is 1 year (not all, though).

I can understand why people without any personal lives and families might want to spend all the time at work. They just don't have anything else. I know a lot of wives (late hours don't work with the girl-friends, that's why I am referring to "wives") whose husbands rarely show up at home and make a lot of money, many of these women either wish that their husbands found something less time-consuming even with much lower salaries or are thinking of divorce.

Exactly. People here are naive and think that working a lot of hours to get a big pay check that you don't even have enough time to enjoy or spend is what life is about. I used to think like this and I was very ambitions coming out of college. After another busy season I find myself continually looking at people two, three, four... ten years deeper into the profession that I am and asking myself is that what my goal is? The answer has come back 100% of the time NO. It's not what life is about. Accountants don't get paid enough until they are partners to make it worthwhile. Most of the people who are speaking highly of the profession haven't been in it long enough to really know it well and this year is the worst I've seen it where people are throwing people under the bus left and right because a layoff is inevitable after the season is over and they're trying their hardest to not look as bad as everybody else so they don't get fired. Job security is a joke. That kind of stress isn't worth any money.

Try staying motivated and positive about the profession when you're sitting in your manager's office working at 10pm on a Sunday and his little daughter is on speaker phone crying because he's not home to tuck her in again like he promised before her school week starts. That really took it home for me. That's not one of my career goals.

ASS.  What's wrong with wanting to spend time with your daughter or wife at 10 P. M. on a Sunday night instead of working?  Yeah, just suck it up and ignore your family or quit.
