B4 or not PA is a stepping stone in your career and for a majority of people, the lifers (as they say) have literally no external private experience (much like professors teaching Accounting straight from their phd's).  You can learn a great deal and have a solid background coming from a regional or local firm.  I was successful for a regional top 10 firm and I know I would have been with the B4 or a small firm but I was just comfortable with the firm that I chose as in the people and culture.  I have met some poor 4.0 auditors from the B4 in my lifetime and some great 3.0 auditors from the regionals, the B4 stress GPA as an entrance given the large applicant pool.  Point is you can have a very successful career without going to the B4.  Trust me I know ;)

Lots of great advice on this forum. I think too many people overstress the big 4. It is like a make or break type of thing for them.

I would say everyone should try their luck at getting into a big 4, if you get in then great otherwise it isn't the end of the world. Never put all your eggs in one basket, always be open to going to work for different industries. That is the good thing about CPAs and the accounting profession it is very diverse in terms of what types of companies you can work for. Everything from CPA firms, private, fortune 500, small mom and pop type stores, home business, non-profits, or government.

Also I would say it is a good idea to plan for the future, especially in accounting. Just take one hour out of your day and sit down to write out your short term and long term goals. When I made my goal sheet I made a big timeline for my long term goals. I listed the next four semesters I needed to graduate and then listed the classes I needed to take for those four semesters which would be my short term goals. Then I added certain things that I do during that semester, such as what clubs to join. Then after that I listed when I would take the four sections of the CPA exam. It is a basic roadmap of the next three years of my life essentially.
