I just finished my exams and would like to add bookkeeping and payroll services to my tax service can anyone suggest good software for bookkeeping and payroll? I was looking at payroll mate for payroll and it seems like a good program. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Agreed with Quickbooks, and you can still have a value-add far beyond running the program for your client. With payroll, is there really much value for you to add? Otherwise you will just be competing with the volume-business of the major payroll providers, and you can't win in the cost competition. Gotta win with value-add.
