Okay but by the time the economy rebounds he might be
ready to collect social security and too senile to work
through the insanity of tax season. I really can't stand
it when people bring up a rebound!

We know the economy probably will rebound but when will
it? It could take decades! Ass is in the word
assumption. You are making an ass-umption. I am 22
years old and for all I know I may be middle aged before
the economy rebounds to a pre-recession state.

Seriously guy take any job you can get. Employers want
it all now and they can have it. According to my mentor
that works for a fortune 500 company you are expected to
have 3 things before they hire you at a large CPA firm or
corporation.

1) Demonstrated leadership-- President of something or
something else impressive.

2) Strong academic achievement-- you have above a 3.5+
but it depends on school name.

3) Work experience- internship, VITA, McDonalds
something to show responsibility.

Also they want you to be young and impressionable. So
they can take your current abilities and cultivate a
future leader.

IT IS TOUGH OUT THERE!

Shoot even if you get hired that doesn't mean you are
set. I saw 3 students come back this year after working
in the big 4 for a couple years. They just got cut
because they didn't work hard enough and establish allies
in upper management to avoid the layoffs. Fresh
accounting graduates then take their places!

So there is my rant!

PA is a snobbish industry. 16 years of non-
public accounting experience = no (public accounting)
experience at all. So my advice would be the following:

1. Kill with "all these years". All these years will only
be relevant in the field you acquired all those years.
However, you can strengthen your apps by focusing on soft
skills that are transferable in audit or tax services.

2. Proper target. You have to find targets that
appreciate a fine balance between experience and fresh
starts - namely small firms, government, and some niche
areas in industry. Be realistic! If a firm routinely
hires students straight out of college for entry-level
positions, that is probably not the best place to submit
a resume.

3. Temp. While I personally despise staffing agencies,
this may be a great way to showcase your skills and get
relevant accounting skills.

4. Consider a specialty that may appreciate your
background: CMA or CIA. I think both of those
designations would be more beneficial to you opposed to a
CPA.

I know what you mean. I'm older than I oughta be too. This is going to
sound corny, but give it a try. . . Be positive! It is the hardest thing in the
world to do right now. It isn't logical given the circumstances. But what have
you got to lose? You sound like you've got more than anyone could ask for
in the skill set column, so go ahead and believe it will be OK. I don't think
that employers want people of a certain age as much as they want people
who are energetic and positive. Young people tend to have those qualities,
but they don't own them exclusively. Don't let frustration, fatigue or worry
cast a shadow on your great qualities. Go get 'em!!! I know you can!

First I like to congratulate you on achieving a goal that so many are still working hard to achieve.

Please don't give up because you have come so far. I have a poem on my wall that I read each day by David Viscott that says, "To succeed takes time and prolonged effort in the face of unfriendly odds."  As he writes in the poem, "winners refused to give up on themselves. With their backs pressed to the wall and no way out, these champions scratched and clawed their way out of the abyss. However, they could have just quit which is what most people do. Instead of fighting back hard, they just give up when the going gets rougher than rough. Remember, winning in life is little more than outlasting the losing."

You keep getting out there and keep looking. Don't you dare give up now. This is coming from someone that is faced with odds so stacked against me that I refuse to be defeated. 6 years ago I graduated with a Bachelors of Science. Since my graduation, I've haven't been able to find a full-time job and I went from volunteering at the Mayor's office of Community Service to stocking shelves in Supermarkets and Walmart's making only $5 per store (3 stores a week on average). I can't afford to live on my own right now and live at home with my mother. I repay her the best way I can. Now, I'm an assistant manager/tax accountant working towards my CPA. Work is not year round nor is it full time. But, it is something and beats stocking shelves.  The opportunities that I have learned in the past 3 years has taken me beyond my wildest imagination. I've never worked for a big four and most likely never will. I don't know where life is taking me right now but all I know is I'm fighting to become a CPA when the odds against me are trying so hard to keep me from become one. I've come to far to turn back and giving up is not an option for me. I've even started my own tax accounting company which is slow but I've haven't invested the time needed for it to flourish. But, I'm right there and I have it in my craps. I don't plan on being employeed by someone for my entire life. My calling is self-employment and now its just a matter of me gaining the experience and license to be able to grow my business.

I hope my story gives you the encouragement to keep fighting. There are people out there worse off than me and you. So don't quit. Take it from someone that has all the reason to quit but has not and will not.
