Personal experience, jobs are out there, but companies are just being very picky these days. As long as you know how the "system" works, getting job interviews are not that difficult.
My first 2 weeks of jobs applying after studying for the CPA exam, I received enormous phone calls from recruiting agencies and several of the companies I applied got back to me for an interview. (I lived in Chicago but applied job in the Bay Area; Open Table, Yelp, hedge fund corporation, Salesforce.com, and other medium size companies).
I ended up taking a temp to hire position through a very professional recruiting agency because I felt that that's the company I want to work for, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Just be aware that most recruiting agencies only want to fill the vacant position versus some actually cares about meeting clients needs and requirements. I chose the later one.
My recommendation is, spending 30 minutes a day learning new skills related to your field, and have an excellent resume and cover letter, getting interviews should be relatively easy.

Hi, jiejenn,
May I ask you, how did you apply for a job? did you use monster.com?
I just passed all parts of CPA exam, and I have not applied jobs for a year, and I don't know how to get started.
Thanks a lot,

Work on your resume first, and after that work on your interview.

I started my own business also and it is slow but what Im finding is if you market right online and at networking groups you will get the clients that want a cheaper option because their CPA is charging too much for the economy. Good luck.
