Yes, thats a prob. You have to wait for your work eligibility (H1B or EAD) to apply for SSN. And, once you get that you can then apply for license. I held on for 2 years after passing my exams as I couldn't get SSN on H4. And then, I recently got my EAD (work eligiblility). So, now I can get SSN & also apply to CO Board after getting one. SSN affidavit isn't an option unfortunately if you are physically present in the US. Its for ppl staying outside the US.

Hi all,

I have also cleared all four sections (CO board). I am
an Indian C.A. and Mcom. When applying clause of
education in lieu of experience for certification I am
also stucked with the problem of SSN #. I am in US on
dependent visa so cannot file SSN affidavit. @tshah and @
Mayurag similar to your case. Can anyone please let me
know how to resolve this?

Thanks for the reply @ Mayura and Tshah.

I agree with you tshah, being physically in US on H4 we
cannot file SSN affidavit. Mayura, your application is in
process and you have submitted SSN affidavit. Let us see
what happens. I am planning to go India this Diwali may be
1 month or so. Is it worth applying to CO board while in
India? What do you say?

Again, since we are in same boat, what are the chances of
getting H1B these days. I passed exams last week, so no
idea of job market. Please share your experiences.

Well, I haven't had luck in getting a job on H4 where employer would apply for my H1B in the last 2 years. I know as a matter of fact that the Big 4 do apply for your work visa in the US, but I wasn't succesful in getting a response to my job applications with them though I was working with one of the Big 4 in India (i.e. to say even though I was past Big 4 employee).  It also depends on the state where you are based. Where are you based? I am based in a state where there are more opportunities for IT engineers / scientists, but not so much for finance / accounting professionals. But, if you are based in the East say around NJ/ NY or in SFO / LA in CA in the West then you definitely have a lot more chance in getting your work visa sponsored in Finance / Accounting as majority of finance cos being based there. That apart, the economy is getting better though at a snail pace than what it was in the last 2 years, so you should definitely try applying for H1B - also look out for a category of Cos who are intermediary Cos meaning they employ you & apply for your H1B and then deploy you on finance contracts with their clients. You eventually stand a chance to be finally employed by those clientele. But, atleast you get a start in your US career.

They not only rejected my application because of no SSN and other reasons but also charged me $185 !!! I had checked the SSN point with them before applying but at that time they didnt raise any concerns. i feel they are just out to make money !

@ tshah so nice of you. Thanks for sharing. Now that
you have EAD and your experience as Big 4 back in India I
am sure you will get job. I am based at Kansas and there
are no opportunities here in finance / accounting field.
I will meet some consultants and try as you suggested. I
am Shah from Gujarat. Looking to your username I thought
to let you know.

@Mayura I am really very sorry for you. I know these
people are very confused abt rules and make everything
complicated. I had bad experience while cpa
registration. License is required for getting job and
experience is required for getting license. Everything
based on SSN. We H4s have no option. But as you say
Hope for the best....and Keep smiling..
