I'm in my early 40s, and am doing the same thing. I am
actually mixing it up with the youngsters, challenging
for leadership positions in organizations, and getting
those positions and doing well. I am going to school full
time in a midwest target school for Big 4, and two of the
four are interested...one is bringing me in for an
internship interview before the round of fall interviews
start, and the other made sure I knew their interview
dates in the fall. I'm going to have some options, either
at Big 4, or perhaps at a mid-level firm.
All I can say, take advantage of campus recruiting, get a
leadership position in some organization on campus. I
think it dispels the notion that your age keeps you from
fitting in with the youngsters. Real life and family may
restrict that somewhat for you, but I think it's a big
plus if you can do it.
Of course, I could completely strike out with interviews
in the fall and make this all a moot point, but this is
the strategy I'm going with. I'm going into the
equivalent of my fourth year. I think Big 4 is attainable
if that's what you want to do, and I've seen a few
examples here and there of older people getting entry
level jobs, if you can handle the entry level work and
salary.
