I have a quick question. I have been working part-time in my family business for
around 3 years and while it has been good experience in general, I have
been getting paid off the books. When I get a background check this
experience won't show up and I assume some red flags will be raised. How
much of a problem will this be with the very rigid recruiting in banks
and other institutions like big 4 and f500? Would it make more sense to say it was unpaid, even though 3 years part-time unpaid seems fairly far fetched?

For the Big 4 I wouldn't worry too much, they seem to care
more about criminal stuff, whether your transcript checks
out, and if there's anything that might create independence
issues [even then, all that means is that you wouldn't be
on certain clients.]
However, I probably would not apply to the IRS if I were
you, or at least not for a few years, because they do check
their employees' tax returns.

Thanks Badcpa, I was thinking that I would just put unpaid on the application even though it seems far fetched that anyone would work for free for 3 years. Also, do you have any idea how they verify employment? Do they ask you for names and numbers and simply call your employers to confirm? Thanks again.

I can't remember what they did as far as previous jobs. I
was entry level and didn't have any serious accounting
experience so maybe they didn't feel the need to verify
most of my employment. I know I had no real contact info
for some of my previous employers and it didn't seem to be
a problem.

Good to hear because I am in the same situation; no accounting-related experience, just the job I mentioned in the post and a non-related internship this summer. One more thing, do I have to list all the jobs I had? I had a retail gig a few months back and just curious whether I would have to put it on my application.
