Hi,
I am graduating with an economics degree with a very low cumulative gpa.
It is around a 2.4.
However, I have recently decided to pursue a CPA, and have taken 5 upper
division accounting courses for 15 hours worth of credit, at a community
college offering state approved CPA courses. All my accounting classes have
been taken at the community college and my accounting GPA here is a 4.0.
The last 15 hours I've taken in college, I've earned a 4.0. I am also on track
to finish another 15 hours this semester with a 4.0 GPA, so that my last 30
hours GPA is a 4.0. I have no prior accounting work experience.
Do I have a chance at big 4, despite my low cumulative gpa? If not, where
should I be looking for jobs? Should I just list my accounting gpa and last
30 hours gpa, and not my cumulative gpa?
Also, even though I graduated from a school with the #1 accounting
program in the country, I did not take any of those courses since I was not
able to, as I was not an accounting major.
Would a degree from such a target school like mine, and an accounting GPA
so high make employers thing that I earned the accounting gpa at my
university and make me look good? The community college i am actually
taking my classes at is only one of 3 in the state that offers these classes
approved to count towards the CPA education requirements.
What are your thoughts? thanks.

Sure, your gpa isn't great. But, here's my experience. I currently work for one of the Big 4 in the Bay Area. My gpa was a 3.3. For a long time, I was told by recruiters that my gpa was too low and due to the competitive nature of the market, I was not an ideal candidate. So, here's what I did. I passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam and then applied again. My experience interviewing after passing the exams was totally different. It was easy and straightforward. I could tell that they didn't give a *removed* about my gpa because I had passed the exams and proven myself. That's what I recommend you do. Also, if you do this, you will stand out from your peers because most people who start do not have the exams passed. The exam is not easy and there will be (many) times you want to shank yourself, but, if public accounting is what you want, go for it! best of luck
