I graduate in December and have accepted an offer to
start with one of the big 4 in their NYC office in
January. However, I'd prefer to postpone that for a few
months to knock out the CPA exam and travel a bit before
I'm committed to a full time job.

Is this a common request from new hires? What are the
odds that they'll be okay with it?

I would think that, because it's the NYC office, they'd
be a bit more flexible with something like this, but
that's pure speculation.

* Also, I'm not sure if this would matter or not, but I
received the offer last November. Therefore, I'm already
scheduled to start over a year after the offer was
made...so I'm curious if that will make the firm more
apprehensive about pushing the date back any further.

I wouldn't try it. With this kind of economy, and with the situation you're in as a recent grad, I'd say just be happy with the job, make the most of it, and seem enthusiastic. Asking to start later can make you look like you don't appreciate the job and that you're not eager to start. It's great to study for exam, and yes, you should be spending every minute that you have off studying for it, but extra study time is not worth risking your job.

Also, you shouldn't even think about traveling until you have the exam passed. It will be a lot more fun traveling with the exam bonus in hand, and without it hanging over your head.

My unoriginal answer is "ditto."

Ouch. Not the response I was hoping for. I still have to
ask a few of the people I know at the big 4, but it sounds
like I may have to rethink this.

Coastergenius: I meant I would complete the exam and travel
afterwards. Having the exam looming over my head while
abroad is definitely something I would try to avoid.
