Hi, I've copy+pasted a job description for a financial analyst job. This sounds like something I might want to do a few years down the line, but I'm not sure exactly what types of job experience one might need for this position.
- Analysis of financial contracts, trends and forecasts
- Financial modeling
- Data mining
- Interfacing with multiple departments
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3+ years applicable experience
- Strong knowledge of building spreadsheets
- Large experience working with and managing large databases and accounting systems a must
- Healthcare background highly desirable
- Technically proficient with advanced skills in MS Office (including Word, Outlook, and Excel)
- Strong research, analytical, and problem solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently with little supervision in a high volume, fast paced, multi-tasking environment
Annual salary range is $75,000 to $95,000 depending on experience
I realize that this isn't directly related to public accounting per se, but this is the most informative forum I've seen about accounting career topics. Also, public accounting experience would almost surely come in handy for these types of jobs. If anyone could could tell me what the typical candiate would be for this type of job I'd be very appreciative.

A lot of seniors from Big 4 firms get FA positions when they exit their firms.

This is one of the most common positions people transfer
out of the big 4 for. While it a may not seem like a
perfect patch, working for the Big 4 will take care of
just about all those requirements.
One thing I've noticed also is that with the Big 4
experience you can get away with not meeting each
requirement for a job. The B4 experience speaks more
for what you are capable of doing, not just what you
actually have done, if that makes sense.

moosepirate, as an auditor, I have to do everything that is described in this job ad. My feeling is that the typical candidate would be the same as for any accounting / auditing position.

This is more or less what I inferred, being aware that a lot of people leave big 4 after a few years. Overall I've noticed that a lot of fa jobs have cost accounting type duties, although this ad might not be the most representative for a "typical" fa position, whatever that might be. I'm assuming that even though a "senior accountant" or "cost accountant" in industry might have more directly related experience, a big 4 auditor might be the more attractive candidate.

do know of a good definition of "data mining" as it would relate to this position?
