I kind of don't understand what's the purpose of the Research section of the simulation. What are they trying to test us on? Searching skills or what?

Also, I've seen people mentioning copy+paste when they talk about the Research section, what copy+paste are they talking about? For this part isn't it just finding the relevant code and selecting it? Were they referring to the communication section? I'm confused.

Earlier we had to copy and then paste the right answer in the research section but now we need to select the right section rather than copy-paste.
