I'm about to send in my initial application to sit for the PA CPA exam but am concerned that a public drunkenness charge will keep me from being able to sit for the exam.  It's a class four misdemeanor (the lowest possible crime one can be charged with and it did not happen in PA), all I had to do was pay a fine of 90 bucks and be on my way.  I've been doing some research and I've seen people busted for FAR worse crimes and they said as long as the charge doesn't relate to unethical business issues / practices you should be fine (they all said their respective boards didn't even bring up any concerns as long as it was properly documented).....I just wanted to get a gauge on how accurate this is and if anybody has any more relevant information.  Thank you in advance.

rlane8511,

My understanding is (and I may not be 100% correct on this so as always you'll want to do your own research and not rely on what others advise) that a criminal record will only affect you if it is a felony or financially-related (which would be a felony anyway). However, some states have a "of good moral character" requirement - you may run into some trouble on that.

The best thing to do would be to contact the PA State Board of Accountancy directly to be sure but whatever you do, if you apply be sure to disclose the charge otherwise if you are allowed to complete the exam and it is discovered you hid it, you could get your license pulled.
