I am wondering how likely it is to get a job in public accounting (NOT Big 4) corporate, or government if you don't do any internships. I am currently in the undergrad accounting program and already have a bachelors degree in a different area. I do have some general corporate work experience (not really accounting related besides helping to file payroll taxes), a good GPA of 3.7 and I plan on joining an accounting organization next semester. I will be going through recruiting this fall and hope to land a full-time offer for fall 2010.

Honestly...what are my chances?

I would say your chances are good.  I got a job at a CPA firm with a GPA of 3.3 and no accounting experience at all.  The internship is helpful but you can get a job without one.

Marie and Nic,

Thanks for you responses. I want to do an internship but I need to graduate by next summer (August) because September is the start date for most public accounting firms.

Are you allowed to take classes while you are interning? If I can still take at least 2 courses during my internship period, I would be able to finish up my classes by August and do an internship. That would be the perfect scenario for me.

Is it possible?

Your internship hours would be during the day, so if you take night classes you might be ok.  But then again, they may expect you to work overtime.  That would be a good question to ask during the interview.  I'm sure there are firms that would accomodate you.

Also, keep in mind that many firms will interview in Sept 2009 to start in Sept 2010, so if you are planning an internship for summer 2010 it won't help you for Sept 2010 unless you get an offer from that firm.
