On Becker page B4-30 there are examples of Two-tier
Architecture and Three-tier Architecture, can some one
please explain this...

3 basic terms you need to know to understand 3 tier architechture. Most ERP systems are 3 tier systems.

1 ) Presentation -The applications/systems which you can see on your desktop.. For example Microsoft Excel

2) Application : Once you enter the transactions and submit post, application systems generates a document number or asset number or vendor number etc..How does this happen ? Because application servers are designed to do this.

3) Database : Once application generates a document or asset number, where does system is going to store this ? In Database server..e.g Oracle.

In two tier systems, there is no application server.. The client/workstation/presentation systems directly deal with the Database server..which is not very efficient. It can be only used for small number of users. Because every time a user queries the client application, database will have large queries to do for the client.

For that reason, we need 3 tier architechture, where the client makes the query, application server processes and then database server will provide the query. And this can be used for large number of users.
