I'm going to be using Becker to review for the CPA exam. However in college I was an econ major, not a business major, so I didn't take any classes on B1, B3, B4, and B5 (I did take cost accounting but I don't know if that's included in B5).

Anyway my question is, will the self-study lecture dvds be good enough to teach me topics that I have never learned before (like financial mgmt, IT, etc.)? Or am I better off taking a live or online class? I haven't registered for Becker yet as I am still deciding which format I'll be using. I'd appreciate any advice and insight you can offer, thanks.

It depends on how good the instructors in your region are, which you don't really know unless you ask someone who has witnessed them.

In my opinion, the self study CD lectures are more useful than the live lecture.  They do a more thorough job.  The flip side of the argument is, you get the self-study lecture CD's if you order the live lecture.  So I was using both, but getting the most help from the lecture CD's.

Bruin, please call Becker to verify the following before purchasing as this is my understanding of the 3 different types of methods.

The self-study CD's are a part of all 3 methods. Regardless of what method you choose, the self-study materials are built in.

Classroom lecture - You get a professor, but when you go sit in the classroom, the professor himself does not lecture. He will play the 3-hour CD. So you hear the SAME lecture (the same CD) as you would have in the self-study. The only advantage is that if you have a question, then you can ask the professor right then and there.

Online lecture - Very similar to the classroom lecture since you listen to the SAME lecture, but at your own convenience. If you have a question, then you email the professor.

Self-Study lecture - You receive the same materials as you would in the other two options. For this option, you must be very self-disciplined. Since you don't have a professor, make sure you don't slack off. Stay on schedule! The only difference here is that if you have a question, you can't ask the professor. However, you may be able to post it here and I'm sure someone will be more than happy to assist you :)

Again, you might want to check the above details directly with Becker. Hope this helps. Good luck for your journey!

I liked the Self-Study lecture best because it gave me maximum flexibility.  I worked at my own pace.  I pushed right through the materials I understood without wasting my time waiting for the instructor to explain to someone who didn't "get it", and re-played anything I missed as often as I needed to "get it" myself.

Furthermore, I didn't have to deal with an internet connection and download delays.

And yes, you CAN ask the Becker instructor when you use Self-Study.  You just log onto the Becker Updates website and select "Ask Becker a Question."  Becker has a staff of CPAs who will reply within a few hours.
