Yes, if you are a state auditor, you work for the state which is a government job. There are a ton of different type of state auditor jobs. There is internal audit, audit of other agencies, audit of sales and use tax, audit of regulated areas such as insurance and loan programs, programmatic audit, audit of recipients of grants and whatever else. Some include (lots of) travel, some are 100% desk based.

Pros: so far much better pay than public, free health insurance, retirement plan (not just 401K), go home at 4:30, 40 hours a week, limited/no stress, organized, no fear of lay offs, no sneakers/jeans but no suit needed either.

Cons: some people may think it is not prestigious enough, no partner potential, pay increases slower than public, no bonus, no gym, no Becker/licensing/exam fees or CPE paid, some stuff has to go through slower government approval process, travel per diem rate generally lower than public.

Another pro is that the govt experience usually still qualifies as experience to get the CPA, but this varies by state.
