Hello All,

I just passed the CA CPA Ethics exam on the 6th try and have some wisdom to share.

First, you actually have 6 tries for the initial price, not 3.  After your 3rd, call them up and they will reset your account for 3 more tries.

With that said, go through all 50 questions and do your best.  You should be aiming for about a 75-80 on your first try.  When you submit your test and don't pass, you'll get a list of areas that you should study.  After your first test, the list will not be very detailed nor very helpful.  If you can match some of the suggested areas with specific questions, then correct those.  I'd suggest not correcting more than 2-3.

Your goal is to increase your 80 to a 82-84, fail a 2nd time and get a 2nd list of suggested areas to study.  This 2nd list is much more detailed than the first one.  By this point you should be able to pinpoint questions that are definitely wrong. Correct them, again maybe 2-3 questions, and resubmit.

Hopefully your score is continually going up.  You should be pretty close.  Continue this process, being sure not to change too many answers.  If you do, you won't know which corrections were actually correct, and you won't be better off.

You got 6 tries to get to 90, so following this strategy after starting with an approximate mid 70 / low 80, you will pass by your 6th attempt without using more time than necessary.  After your 3rd fail, and you calling the CA CPA board for 3 more attempts, it will be as if you haven't taken any tests.  If you fail again on your 4th try, it will be just like failing on the 1st try.  The response form won't be very helpful.  If you fail again on the 5th try, you will get a very detailed response form just like your previous 2nd fail, and you will again be able to pinpoint incorrect answers and correct them with a high degree of certainty.

This test is hard and you could spend a lot of time on it if you aren't strategic about using all 6 attempts and the response forms indicating which areas to study.

Good luck,
Passed on the 6th attempt with a 90

thanks for the strategy. May I ask how did you study for the first test? did you read the book/pdf file before answering the questions, or did you read only the section that related to the questions asked??

I only read the section that related to the questions. Unless you have 1,000 hours please do not read the whole thing.
