Does anyone have advice on how to work those recruiting socials?   I get the feeling when I approach someone they are saying "who is this fool?"  And they always seem to have favorites they are already chatting with.   What about new hires that still know students..how do you ever get in good with them as someone outside their loop.

If you see and speak with one person over several events...do you have to write a thank you note each time?

And finally what if you interview with one year and are not hired...and you see the same people again the next year.  Super awkward...did they hate you or simply have limited choices.  Do you speak nicely to them or shrug.

I quit going.  They don't want to talk to you unless you're the President of BAP and have a 3.9 GPA.  Even then, they don't always remember your name.  That's the impression I've got at all the ones I've ever went to.  In fact, even had a President of BAP tell me the same thing, said he got a job with one of the firms from the thing, but they didn't remember him from the event.

There are two ways of doing this.

First one is to talk to as many "professionals" as possible, not everyone is talking about recruiting. Some will be talking about football, baseball, kids, or something else that you should be able to talk about and carry on about. Then casually ask how long have they been working where ever, what line are they in, how do they like their clients. That kind of stuff. And repeat this with as many people as you can. The more people that can put your name with your face and remember your last name the better chance you have.

The second option is to try and get real friendly with other job seekers so that you can come up to them when they are talking to some "professionals" and introduce yourself and weasel your way in.

Networking is probably the most important skill when trying to get yourself a job. Don't half ass it. Work hard at it and sell yourself.

Thanks for the tips.  I have no trouble talking once I start.  Its the issue with it seems they look at me and don't want to talk before I even shake hands.  And I look normal, clean cut, un-offensive.  As if they already havea secret list and all others dont matter.  One guy wouldn't even shake hands with me at first.  Kinda sets the tone for a bad start at things.

It's not you. Many accountants are weird and don't really like talking to people. You are there because you're looking for a job they are there because they have to be.

Be confidant and you'll do fine.
