Hi All,

Here's my dilemma, I have a master's degree in Accounting and have recently passed all four parts of the CPA exam in NYC. I've been at my current position (internal audit) for exactly 1 year now. However, my manager is not a CPA and my director is an inactive CPA. So under the circumstances, which state would allow me to get my CPA license? I have no intention to stay in audit any longer as I hate it so much. But I do want to be able to present myself as a CPA and practice(in tax) as a CPA in NY. Can this be done at all?  Or my only way to accomplish this is to go work for an active CPA?

Please help!!! Thanks so much in advance!

I dont think the CPA has to be active in order for your expierience to qualify.

Can anyone comment on this?

Most states require that the signing CPA is active.

I believe Illinois does not.

In Kentucky, your experience would have to be "verified" by an active CPA.  If you have a Master's, you are fine with Kentucky educational requirements.  You neither have to be a Kentucky employee nor resident to be a candidate for the Kentucky license.  Experience in either public or private accountancy qualifies.  You need 1900 hours, I think.

The board's website states that the candidate does not need to be supervised by the CPA who does the verification, and the CPA may be licensed in any state.  I guess that means that the candidate's experience can be verified by any CPA who has knowledge of the experience.  Perhaps the Kentucky board would allow you to get a CPA outside your company to do this.

You may not advertise yourself as a CPA in a jurisdiction where you do not possess a license.  Business cards stating that you are a CPA would be trouble outside Kentucky.  You would probably be OK writing on your resume that you "passed the CPA exam" and that you are "licensed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a public accountant".

You may not borrow the title "CPA" or "Certified Public Accountant" in a different jurisdiction.

NY101, i suggest a two tier state; IL or AL. They do not a residence or
experience for the first tier. When you get the work experience then you
can apply in NY. That way you are a CPA when you apply for your next job
out of AUDIT.
