This came up in course of some of my other post. This is what I said:
"You know I actually had a chance to work with one of the Big 4 very
closely as part of my internal audit function, and I gotta tell you,
although sounding a bit crude, you might have quite a valid point. Some
girls would be just running around, gathering docs, giggling like crazy
(I'm serious). However, there were couple of staff level auditors
(especially guys) who were very driven and seemed to be very
knowledgeable. I was laughing at some of the stuff the girls were
asking. They were like glorified clerks running around gathering some
pre-indexed schedules, writing up the workpapers and xeroxing some
endless paperwork. In my two years as an internal auditor it seems like
I've done more and learned more than any of these pretty faces would
ever do in two years. But again it might be my only limited exposure to
them. There was also one extremely beautiful Hispanic girl with whom I
studied at college. I know for sure her GPA was lower than mine, and
she's done horribly in one of my accy classes (I worked with her on the
accy project). Somehow she got a job with Big 4! Everyone was as much
stunned as I was."
Do you think that's true? Because every time I meet Big 4 people, they are either typical Alpha males or typical Carry Prejean look-alikes.
Am I missing something here?

It is absolutely logical for a service industry to prefer attractive employees over unattractive. They want to impress their clients and CFOs like to see pretty women. They are similar to Abercrombie and Fitch in this regard and I don't know if it could be held against them

First of all, I'd like to say congratulations on the job offer, and that you should most definitely take it. In this economy, nobody is really in a position to turn down good (or sometimes, even "bad") offers.
With that said, I find your above comment to be kind of ignorant and envious.
These "beautiful girls" who are getting jobs over you are getting offers for a good reason. They are probably more positive and personable than those people NOT getting the offers, and a positive attitude is something important to have around in public accounting. They are most likely confident, thus meaning that they would likely deliver good presentations to the client/partners. They are likely well-dressed - appearance is important, as we know. They likely have at least an above-average GPA, or else it is doubtful they would get any offer. They likely know how to **connect** and **network** better than those NOT getting the offers. Have you ever thought about what other qualifications they might have unrelated to their school work? Maybe they've had a couple industry accounting internships. Maybe they've worked part-time all throughout college. Maybe they've worked full-time. Maybe they're involved on campus and/or the community. Maybe, just maybe, they're a lot better qualified and well-rounded candidates than those people with the 4.0 GPA!! Ever thought about any of those things? It's unfair to judge beautiful girls getting offers. Because, at the end of the day, there is likely a legit reason they got hired over you. Don't hate on them because they're pretty. Don't judge without knowing all the facts.

So happy for you and your full-time job offer Dalia!!!! Glad to see the CPA pay off! I follow your posts on here :) And about your question - ppl always get things they don't deserve for various reasons: nepotism, corruption or some variation of favoritism. It happens!

Wow, firehouse. I don't hate them. If I ever hated beautiful, confident, well-dressed people, then I'd hate myself, and trust me, I know my own worth!
It's just a scientific, 3rd party, independent observation in my own experience, that majority of Big 4 low-level staff (and higher-level to some extent too) are Alpha males and Carrie Prejan's of this world.
Of course, my headline was a bit over-the-board but it also attention-grabbing and induces people to have a discussion in a relevant area. And if you think that beautiful people don't have confidence issues, you're mistaken, on the contrary, some of the most beautiful people that I know have the biggest confidence issues.
If you have never noticed the fact that these types of service industries are swarmed with pretty faces, then you are blind. I didn't find anything in your post disaproving my point, only venom and complacency. Of course, these pretty faces should have DONE something to put on their resumes...'social chair' of their sorority...'head pollbearer' of their fraternity...part-time job at a college watering hole. Please.
All I want to get across is that it is more a reflection of our society than anything else. Ugly children (as well as poor and neglected children) are at a huge disadvantage to begin with. They are being bullied and discouraged. Of course they'll have the confidence issues and have trouble to network and communicate effectively. If someone thinks college is anything different that high-school, I'll laugh in your face.
And that's just unfair.
