Hi, I am currently approaching my one year mark at a
public accounting firm in NY. It is primarily a
healthcare and not-for-profit firm but is respected in
the tristate area as one of the top firms practicing in
their field.

The problem is that I really do not enjoy working for non
profit/ healthcare. My dream was always to work for
Big 4, or at the very least Grant Thornton, RSM
McGladrey, etc. in the "for profit" financial fields
(hedge
funds, alternatives, derivatives, etc). The reason I took
the job at my current place is bec the awful economy
that hit last yr when I was looking for a job.

I want to get out of not for profit accounting and move
to a larger firm, preferably Big 4. Does anyone have any
advice on how to go about this? I know it is going to be
extremely
difficult as I have only 1 yr experience which makes me
fit into
neither experienced nor campus recruiting. I would stick
it out another yr at my firm except that I'm hesitant to
do so being that I don't want to stay in healthcare/not
for profit and I'm nervous that if I apply as an
experienced auditor to a larger firm they will want to
place me in the field that I am experienced in.

Any ideas of how to go about this? If this helps at all,
I passed all the parts of the CPA this year while working
at this firm.

Thank you!

May I ask you to describe your job, and what specifically about it don't you like?

Yep it's the only way. There is no chance you can get into a big 4 now with 1 year of experience, not even 2. Also even if you do get into the big 4 in audit, you might not get financial services, nothing you can do about that at all. Once you get assigned its hard to get into a different group.
