To start things off I'm a recent college graduate
(accounting + finance major), but still unemployed. I
had an accounting internship and would like to get into
public accounting so I was planning on taking the CPA
exam this summer.

---

I feel like the information on taking the CPA exam is
really poorly organized and I've looked around but keep
getting kind of frustrated so I was hoping you guys could
answer a couple of questions for me:

1. When applying for the exam, should I get the school to
directly send a copy of the transcript? Or do I need to
get an official transcript from the school and send it in
along with all of my other application materials myself?

2. If you pass all four sections of the CPA exam, have
you passed them forever?

I didn't know how else to word it but what I mean is: If
I pass the CPA exam in the next year but end up not
working in accounting for a year or two would there ever
come a point where I would have to take the CPA exam
again (because I wasn't licensed in X amount of time)?

3. Does anyone know the licensing requirements in NJ? Are
there a certain amount of audit / tax hours necessary in
order to be licensed?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Novanation,

First off congrats on your recent graduation. I know that
its not easy times for the accounting and finance fields
at this time. However with persistence and a CPA, you'll
find much success.

1. When you apply, it depends on where you need to send
your transcripts to. Typically, they are sent to the
State Board of Examiners or Consumer Affairs in New
Jersey (where i presume you are from). You'll need to
find your state's licensing agency for the CPA.

2. Not necessarily. AICPA states that once you pass your
first section, you have 18 months to pass the other 3
sections. If not, then you'll have to go back and pass
that section of the exam again.

3. I'm not certain since I'm from Illinois, but I would
encourage you to go here for more information:
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/accountancy/index.htm

I hope this helps. Good luck on your pursuits!

Novanation,

You passed the first test, which is realizing that the information you need is scattered, and difficult to find. In the years that I've been sifting through it, it has gotten slightly better organized (and thank goodness for the Internet), but it's still difficult. Your first stop with most of these questions is your state board for the state you are applying to, which appears to be NJ. The contact information can be found on Nasba.org (http://www.nasba.org/nasbaweb/NASBAWeb.nsf/WPMSBL?OpenForm) and the actual website for the NJ board is http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/accountancy/index.htm. I'd recommend you try to find what answers you can on this website, and then call the state board to answer the rest of your questions. And keep that phone number in your speed dial - you'll be using it more than once, I can assure you.
