I can do this! I just know I can! We all can!

As with any goal in life, persistence and determination are key. I may not be the most intelligent, the most experienced, or the most educated, but when it comes persistence and determination, I can run with the best of 'em.

I was not an accounting major, I've never worked for any of the Big Four, I work full-time at a demanding job, and I've been out of school for years and years. But it doesn't matter. I am going to make this happen.

My Becker materials should be arriving tomorrow! I've been studying AUD with Gleim, but my employer offered to pay for Becker, so I ever so gratefully accepted.

I'm going to put in 30 hours per week studying, and I'm going to pass the first time!

I'm going to pretend I'm in jail for the next 7 months with minimum phone/visitor privileges. My life behind bars: work, eat, study, sleep, mow the lawn, mix in some exercise, maintain good hygiene. Given my current single status, I guess I won't have to pencil in conjugal visits. But February 2011 is going to be a great month!

AUD - 8/29/10
BEC - 10/13/10
REG - 11/23/10
FAR - Jan. 2011

its about time, well, you can have your conjugal visits and still pass the exam. :-) Good time management and planning (such as setting up the schedule and keeping up with that) will help a lot.

Whew! This studying business is tough on so many levels:

  • My eyes are strained from all of this damned reading
  • My back hurts from sitting in this damned chair for so long
  • I feel carpal tunnel coming on --damn it!
  • Sitting here studying so many hours is damned lonely
  • I don't have much of a support system -- damn it, again! (As a matter of fact, there are a couple of folks who would like to see me fail--but that's not going to happen! That nonsense motivates me all the more.)

But I don't care. I'm going to do this. I'm wrapping up the second of five parts of the Becker AUD program today, and starting the third tomorrow.

IAT,

I am a career counselor but I'm going to respond like your aunt. :-)

1. Get better lighting. Even at a local thrift store (maybe one where your purchase benefits the Humane Society or another worthy org.), get more lamps, lighting and whatever you need. There is no reason you need to go blind just to become a CPA.
2. Get a better chair.
3. According to Swedish researchers, carpal tunnel is NOT a wrist problem but actually starts up between the shoulder blades. If you are hunched over in that chair, you are exacerbating the situation. Chiropractors and even some massage therapists are very good at getting rid of the built up tension in your shoulders. Handle this weekly and you will stay ahead of the situation. Surgery is your LAST option and NOT the best. Too many of my career counseling clients have had multiple surgeries and they are no picnic. I had carpal tunnel and my chiropractor handled it. No problem.
4. Set up a reward system for yourself. If you complete x lessons or y problems or z hours, you then get to watch a DVD or a TV show. Each week, treat yourself to a break, whether it is going to a Parents without Partners event (they never check) or join a MeetUp group in your area.
5. You have support here--an entire sea of support. Reach out and ask. There are people here you have walked the path you are on and people who are walking that path right now.

We are here for you! Now go, dude, go!!! :-)
