I just applied for a manager position at D&T in audit.  I have 5 years (3+ as Senior) experience working on big attest engagements for a mid size firm.  Am I dreaming or do I have a realistic shot?

Depends on which mid size firm you came from? I left EY NYC about a year ago as a Senior2. At the time, i submitted my friend's resume in, and he got in as a Senior 2,(my position) after 5 years at BDO. And i also heard a couple other seniors came in with 4-5 yrs of experience from other BIG mid size ( either BDO/ Grant Thorton/ or RSM McGladrey). So unless, your from the big mid tier firms, i doubt it. My old manager came in from Pepsi, with 10 years of experience in Internal Audit. So coming in as a manager, you prob have to do your dues at a Fortune 500.

Not from a big mid size, but I work with my firms largest clients, which are mosly former Big 4 clients.

hmm, I think you'll get in, but probably you'll have to settle for Senior 3. I'm almost sure they're not going to give you Manager even if you get the interview. You'll have a good chance getting in as a experienced Senior because of the larger clients you worked on. But you also have to remember 1 thing, your firm's largest client are probably Big 4's smallest clients. I worked with plenty of "small" engagements, where their annual revenue is about 100million. The big clients they consider, in my industry, which is financial services,  which I had my hands on are BlackStone/ NASDAQ/ CITI Group. I use to work at Retail/Manufac/ entertainment side, and the Big clients they consider are Estee Lauder/ Verizon/ and MTv one of my smaller ones. Hope that helps! But, getting in, good chance! manager..mmm..very doubtful
